At the beginning of Undertale, the role player is given the selection of naming the fallen man.

Normally, the game asks "Is this name right?" when request for confirmation of the proper name, merely some names trigger a unique response, and some of these names (mainly those of major characters in the story) cannot exist used. Other names do not trigger whatsoever particular message merely take a unlike bear on on the gameplay. "Frisk" is the merely exception, as changing the proper noun is required to leave Difficult Mode.

Names with custom response

Beneath are listed names that give a custom response, replacing the default ane. Alphabetic characters are case-insensitive and kana are script-insensitive. When played in Japanese, due to being able to enter both kana and alphabetic characters, the same response occurs regardless of whether the English or Japanese proper name was entered.

Names with other furnishings

  • Drak, Gigi, or Gugu - The Steak in the Shape of Mettaton's Confront shows upward equally "FSteak" instead of "FaceSteak" (the proper noun does not change in v1.01). This proper name is a reference to Gigidigi's Persona four comic, "Hiimdaisy". Notably, Gigidigi has besides helped work on the game.
  • Gaster or ガスター - In the original PC versions, the game reloads the title sequence later pressing the confirm push; in the latest version, the game reloads equally presently as the last grapheme of "Gaster" is entered. In the original PlayStation four, Vita, and Nintendo Switch versions, the game crashed and displayed an error message when inbound "Gaster"; in the latest version, information technology only reloads the title screen.

Changing the proper noun in the Save files

  2. Open the file named file0 with a text editor of choice.
  3. The name is stored on the first line. Supervene upon it with a new name. Numbers and symbols can be added to this new name, merely if it is longer than six characters, it covers surrounding text. Using a forbidden name has no effect.
  4. The name is also stored in undertale.ini and is displayed when loading a Save file, but it is overwritten with the file0 name when the game is saved if they are unlike. If the game is reset instead of loading a Salve, the undertale.ini proper noun overwrites the file0 name instead.

If the game detects that the name has been edited (for example, if information technology is longer than vi characters), the text "Like shooting fish in a barrel to change, huh?" appears in the Stats carte du jour. Oddly enough, this does non occur if a forbidden proper noun is used.

Trivia

  • All forbidden names can be used in the Undertale Demo.
